Galentine’s Day Outfit Inspiration

Love is in the air and the fashion is extraordinaire! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I’ve seen some great fashion inspo. But, what about Galentine’s Day outfit inspo? For those who don’t know what Galentine’s Day is, it is a holiday reference from the famous TV show Parks and Recreation. Leading character, Leslie Knope, describes it as:

“Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

Romantic relationships are worth celebrating just as much as friendships. With that, I offer a Galentine’s Day outfit roundup to step out and show out with your girlfriends.

Cocktails for Two or Three

Whether you’re grabbing cocktails with your BFF or your entourage, a chic, sexy look is always a winner. Pair your most killer black leggings or skinny jeans with a red top. Take this sleeveless high-low top from Luvmemore. The sheer red top works perfectly with a fun bejeweled bustier or lace bralette. And, the long tail is playful for those with a flare for making a dramatic entrance.

Brunch Bunch

There’s nothing like sipping on mimosas and digging into your favorite brunch dishes! For Galentine’s brunch, slip effortlessly into the Suit Up Dress from Soncy. Suit dresses are some of my favorite! I love the details of this dress with a satin collar and gold-toned lion head buttons. I accessorized my outfit with a red beret for a Parisian-inspired look. It’s guaranteed to make your girlfriends swoon with cuteness overload.

Coffee Date

It’s a date! Take your bestie for coffee to your favorite spot and enjoy the best lattes and baked goods. I always go to a local coffee house with Instagram worthy ambiance to snap cute shots while we sip and chat. I love this body-hugging rose print dress that’s perfect for curves! The velvety soft, stretchy material makes me feel comfy and cute.

All the Single Ladies

What better way to celebrate Galentine’s Day than with your single sisters! Dance the night away in the Life of the Party sequin midi dress! It’s Beyoncé approved. This fun flirty dress is perfect for many occasions, especially when the celebration is all about self-love and good friends.

No matter the time or place, celebrate in style with your girlfriends on Galentine’s Day and any day.

XOXO,

10 Latina-Owned Brands Holiday Gift Guide

Growing up in South Texas, the holidays have always been a special time with traditions like eating tamales, buñuelos, and drinking hot chocolate with my family. It means so much to me now more than ever because I live a six-hour drive away in Austin, TX. Every year I can see that my abuelita’s pace gets a little slower, and it reminds me of how precious this time is with my family. Passing down traditions and keeping our culture alive and thriving is critical when our country is facing divisive rhetoric not just from government leadership, but even people who are our neighbors.

I decided to shop local and POC-owned businesses this year to gift friends and family. And, I was compelled to create a Latina-Owned holiday gift guide of some of my favorite brands. It’s a way for me to uplift my hermanas by shopping with their business and sharing my knowledge on where to get this cool stuff, que esta con madre.

1. Hija de tu Madre

The denim chaquetas at Hija de tu Madre are stylish and go perfect for any season! Wear them in winter to stay warm and follow abuela’s golden rule y ponte una chaqueta! Two of my favorite designs are the Frida Kahlo and Sirena Trucker Jacket. But, there are so many bright and colorful designs like the Virgentcita Jacket and the Baila Esta Cumbia Bomber Jacket (It’s Selena Approved♥).

Make sure you load up your cart with a Concha Phone Case & Latina Necklace while shopping. Mira que pretty! And, for the Latina boss and entrepreneur, get the Make Jefa Moves Notebook Set. I particularly love the “You’re doing great mija” notebook! Jefa goals!

2. Jen Zeano Designs

One of the most iconic Latina boss tees, worn by Gina Rodriguez, is the Latina Power tee at Jean Zeano Designs. And, it also comes in a sueter! Stay calm and calientita with your new suetersito. But, I bet you didn’t know that the Latina tee also comes in kids sizes para la bebe and your young poderosa!

They’ve also got some really great beanies to match with your new sueter cause one is the loneliest number and two is obviously better than one.

And, if you’re looking for an array of inspiring Latina tees, Jen Zeano has 28! Check me out in the Sentimental Pero Chingona Tee and the Not Your Mamacita Tee. Pa que sepan!

3. Las Ofrendas

If you ever had a dream about your perfect floral crown, Las Ofrendas can make that dream come true. I love my mermaid corona! Living out my sirena dreams!  You can shop one of these floral crowns by following lasofrendas to visit the next pop-up shop or marketplace event. Also, visit the Etsy shop to snag some amazing hand-made jewelry and cards. Send your love through a Selena or Frida Kahlo card!

4. Hustle for the Cause

I cannot rave enough about Hustle for the Cause! They strive to create cultural awareness and empower women, POC, and LGBTQ communities through their events like Chingona Fest Texas and their products. “Every product and event developed by Hustle for the Cause is tied to a philanthropic initiative . We’re passionate about social change, so we hustle for the cause.” To read more about their mission and story, visit their site. Also, shop their online products like the Chingona Power beanie and Hustle and Be Chingona Sweatshirt.

5. Soni Trends

Soni trends has the hook-up when you need a shirt to go with your mood. I love my “Me Vale” tee, which gives me all the poderosa vibes. And, check me out in this cute Chula, Chingona, y Comelona tee! This tee is 100% accurate.

And, who doesn’t love a good mug to drink up your cafecito or champurrado! Que rico! My picks are the Viva La Vida and Bidi Bidi Bom Bom Mug.

6. !Sin Faja¡

I don’t think I have ever been this excited about a new upcoming brand than this one. From their Instagram, “A brand that is funny, fearless and lonja loving! Created by a plus-size Latina for everyone!” Yes! You read right! Created by a self-loving, proudly titled, plus-size Latina that is rooting for all of you! It’s hard to pick one I love the most, but one of my favorite items is the “Comadres Over Competition” tee.

The message is clear and one that I fervently believe in. Often in our community, Latinas are pitted against each other as if there is no room for everyone to be successful, shine, and have a voice. When one rises, we all rise.

And, I love this Sin Faja Hoodie! It’s okay to have lonjas and not wear fajas. And, it’s okay if you do wear fajas. Your body, your choice. And, remember all lonjas are good lonjas.

7. GRL Collective

What better way to empower girls and women than through education. GRL Collective is a Latina-owned brand that gives a portion of every sale to fund girls education in India. As a Latina, I find that empowering women and girls around the world is essential to our growth. When marginalized groups come together and support each other, amazing things happen.

And, I am really feelin’ these pom pom earrings! I have these beautiful pair of flamingo earrings named after Flora Patencio and gold palma earrings named after Nellie Coffman. A pair that I have been eyeing is the Alexandrias named after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Goals.

8. Lys Santamaria Artist

Y arriba mis hermanas de Colombia! From her bio, Lys writes, “I was born in Colombia and grew up in Canada and the United States. While in Canada, the First Nations people shared their traditional beading techniques with me. Since then, I have been painting with beads by embroidering thousands of tiny beads into fabric to create 2D artwork, sculpture and jewelry. ”

I met Lys while shopping the mercado at Chingona Fest Texas 2018. I went by her booth and immediately fell in love with her work! I present to you the holy trinidad: Selena, Frida, and Celia. My enamel pins go perfectly with my denim chaqueta from Hija de tu Madre. See what I did there? I love combining my Latina brands together to create an epic look and the most Chingona wardrobe.

You can shop her art, pins, earrings, and other beautifully craft pieces online.

9. Garzig Design

I’ve petitioned that Angel’s image appear next to the word Chingona in Webster’s Dictionary in print and online because she is a total badass. Facts. The stickers are mad cool! The Body by Conchas sticker currently decorates my laptop so peeps know I have no shame in my concha-game. And, who can resist the Anything 4 You Selena Sticker Set!

If you’re in the Austin and surrounding areas, you can shop Garzig designs in person! Make sure to follow this mujer valiente on Instagram for the next pop-up location.

10. Enxcreative

Artist and brand owner Elizabeth Núñez-Xoconoxtle creates amazing Dia de los Muertos inspired merch with iconic Latina figures as Selena, Frida, Celia and more! I absolutely love the velitas, mugs, and stickers! I am a proud owner of the Selena mug and pins! They make my heart go Bidi Bidi Bom Bom!

Be sure to follow Enxcreative and see where they pop-up next!

These are just some Latina-owned brands to shop for the holidays. Drop a brand name in the comments that you would love give a shout-out!

This blog is not sponsored or endorsed by the above mentioned brands. I would inform you as a reader if it was. I just love sharing my knowledge of Latina brands that I know you’ll love too! Happy shopping at these tienditas!

Is SHEIN or is She OUT? Brand Review

After seeing a plethora of gorgeous outfits on posts from my fashion blogger friends on social media, I decided to give SHEIN a try. You can shop online at SHEIN for the latest trends and what they say is the “one-stop-shop for the modern yet economical fashionista”. I’ve always been the type to shop flash sales and in bulk. So, price and quantity is definitely something I consider for my purchases.

What strikes me the most is the amount of options available in plus-size. It is a bit overwhelming since I am not accustomed to this many options. But, I’m not complaining! In a world where a plus-size woman can’t even go the mall to find an outfit, the more options, the better…right?

After sorting through a long list in my online cart, I narrowed it down to four pieces: a dress, jumpsuit, and two sweaters. Fall in Texas is still humid hot. So, I opted for a couple of pieces that would be stylish and appropriate for the weather down south like this flowy dress and wide leg jumpsuit.

SHEIN Plus Knot Front Striped Wide Leg Jumpsuit – Search ID: 521505

The wide leg jumpsuit is my absolute favorite piece from my order. I am a definitely a stripes lover! And, I would encourage any petite plus-size fashionista who wants to try wearing striped outfits and wide leg pants to give it a go! I’ve heard all reasons like, “I’m too chubby to wear stripes” or “I’m too short for wide leg pants!” I thought the same way too until I started breaking these absurd fashion rules for plus-size women. If there is something you are curious about trying, try it. If you don’t end up liking it, don’t wear it. But, this one is definitely a keeper for me! It’s also really comfortable and I love the tie knot detail in the front. My only critique for this piece is the material. I love the look and the fit. But, I would love this in a better quality material. It is 100% Polyester. That being said, it is really affordable, currently at a price of less than $20. And, it’s a perfect transitional piece from summer to fall. It can work for a brunch attire or work attire with a change of accessories.

SHEIN Plus Flounce Layered Neck Striped Dress – Search ID: 531475

The most striking dress I found while browsing the plus-size selections was this long flowy, brightly-colored striped dress. I knew instantly I had to have it! It would be a perfect addition to my wardrobe selection for my cruise to the island of Cozumel, Mexico. It’s beautiful, easy to put on and head out to venture with a pair of sandals and a big sun hat. You can also wear it off the shoulder too.

This would have been my favorite piece had it not been for the material. That is my biggest disappointment about the dress. I love the color and the fit. It is made of 100% Polyester. However, I will say that it is cute and trendy for the price.

SHEIN Plus Rabbit Print Faux Fur Pompom Detail Sweatshirt Search ID: 573363

Fall is here and winter is around the corner. I chose to get a sweatshirt and sweater to prepare for seasonal looks. I got this adorable white sweatshirt with a graphic of a bunny with a black pompom tail. It is super cute! I paired it with one of my favorite black leggings and knee-high black boots. And, I couldn’t resist this blush pink sweater with pearls! It goes great with jeans, leggings, or a skirt!

SHEIN Plus Drop Shoulder Pearl Beading Jumper Search ID: 541579

For the sweatshirt, I recommend sizing up. I ordered a 2X and it was a bit snug. And, both of the items were a bit short in length for my taste. But, they’re cute and are easy to style for fall or winter looks.

My overall impression of SHEIN is that it’s a great place to find affordable and trendy pieces. I recommend checking each individual size chart for the item as sizes vary. I was a 1X in some pieces and a 3X in others. Each item lists what the materials are made of so keep that in mind. If you’re looking for trendy pieces for the season with a huge selection in plus-sizes, then SHEN is your one-stop-shop.

To shop these looks visit SHEIN and shop with Code curvy20 at checkout! It is 20% off original price and valid for the order over $59 of plus-size items.

Be sure to tag @sheinofficial  and use the hashtag #shein and show off your style!

Are you ready to conquer your can’t?

Being the kid who was always picked last for sports teams really left a mark on me. I was the fat kid who couldn’t possibly excel as an athlete. The truth is I loved dancing and basketball. Perhaps if I had an encouraging coach or my peers didn’t pick on me, I would have developed skills that made playing sports enjoyable. Instead, I dreaded gym class so much that at one point I was failing. My dad was so mad at me. He asked how could I fail something so simple as gym!

I was 13 at the time and was self-conscious of my body. I worried that everything would jiggle while running. Because of that instilled fear, I was deprived of enjoying physical activities. Now at 31, I still have that fear of how my body will look like while working out. But, I don’t let that fear stop me anymore.

I developed a great routine. I’d get up at 7AM and head to the gym and do cardio for about an hour. It really got my day going. That was until a horrible break-up in New Year’s of 2017. That really set me back emotionally. I didn’t want to get up and go to the gym. It had been months since I worked out until I started Primal 7 in the spring.

Primal 7 is something I can easily do at home. If I don’t feel like driving out because of the weather or simply because I don’t want to be around people, I have this option right at home.

I was scared initially to trust the bands. I thought there was no way they could support my weight. I am 245 lbs. I was resisting to lean over with the band around my lower abdomen until my trainer said encouragingly, “Don’t worry. The bands got you. You can let go.” The bands are designed for support. I found out more information on their website (see article). They offer 3 different band options with weight guidelines and NOT RESTRICTIONS. This is because Primal 7 wants to encourage people to choose the band that is best for them.

Once I learned to trust the bands, I was able to do moves that I have never been able to do well like push-ups. I hated doing push-ups in gym class. It’s always been something I avoid due to my back pain. With Primal 7, I am now able to do push-ups. First, I lean over with the band supporting me in my lower abdomen. I reach out with my hands to touch the floor and at this position I start to crawl back to straighten out while the band is still supporting me. The band provides resistance so I can push down and up. I inhale while I push down and exhale while I push up at the recommendation of my trainer. Exhaling while I push up offers that boost to help come back up.

Another move I’ve been able to do now is lunges. And, not just any lunges, but a lunge and knee drive. I step into a Primal 7 lean. I like to call this a Michael Jackson Lean from Smooth Criminal. In this position, you are leaning back with the band around your armpits. Personally, I hold onto the green belts from Primal 7 for support. You can use your arms where needed. Take a step back into a lunge, bending the back leg so the knee almost touches the ground. Push into the front foot to return to a standing position and drive the knee back up toward the chest. Do 10 to 12 reps. Switch sides. Repeat.

I may not be able to drive my knee that high. I was wobbling when I took my first lunge on Primal 7 and there are some moves I am unable to do yet. But, that’s okay. Primal 7 is designed to meet the individual at their level and help strengthen. Progress.

And, what inspires me more to continue is the stories of so many people who’ve been sharing their journey with Primal 7. Amber, who goes by @fatforestgoddess on Instagram, decided to give Primal 7 a try after she saw one of my posts. She wrote, “my mobility is at an all time low, and moving hurts ALL the time. Gyms aren’t designed for a person of my weight, and I need an ultra low-impact option to build strength in my lower body.” I can relate so much to Amber’s experience because I have constant back pain. The periods of my life where I had minimal to no back pain were all at times when I was regularly active. I would go to the gym 3-4 times a week, go dancing, go swimming, go walking, and I didn’t feel so out of breath after climbing stairs. And, I want to be in that place again. And, full disclosure, I was still plus-size at those times. You can be plus-size and be active. You can be plus-size and still feel good.

You see the diversity of people represented in Primal 7 because that’s always been their goal. They wanted to create an inclusive community in the fitness world that had been lacking. There were so many times I avoided getting a gym membership, buying a fitness product, or quit a class for yoga, dance, or another physical activity because of how left out I felt. I didn’t feel accepted. I wasn’t represented. Nothing about that community or brand spoke to me. So, where was the sense of belonging? Where was the support? I don’t feel that way with Primal 7. It’s okay to be at my level. There’s no judgement. I can focus on me and my goals.

Are you ready to conquer your can’t?

I dressed like Selena for a week and this is what happened

I’ve been gordita all my life and I was bullied growing up. I found myself playing make believe at an early age that I was like Selena Quintanilla Perez. I remember dancing to Selena y Los Dinos songs in my room as a little Tejanita with hair brush in hand, boom box blasting Como La Flor.  I would tell myself that one day I was going be like her and that my life would be very different. I just had to wait until I was older and skinnier. Well, I got older and fatter. And, for a long time I hated my body. I hated myself.

I was twenty-seven when I started modeling and it helped build up my confidence. But, I found that after three years of modeling, I still had a lot of work to do on the inside. Taking pretty pictures doesn’t fix everything, it doesn’t make you hurt less. You can only see yourself differently when you change your perspective. Now let’s make something clear, body positivity and self-love are two different things. Being body positive is political and self-love is the individual journey. Here is a brilliant article that eloquently describes it better than I can.

While my belief surrounding fat people and our rights to live freely and happily, including myself, changed, I was still working on my personal journey to self-love. Something that I learned through body positivity was the right to wear what I want despite my weight, body shape, size, height, etc. When Selena’s birthday month rolled around on April 2018, I told myself I was going to pay homage to the Queen of Tejano by recreating some of her most iconic looks. For so long, I thought I couldn’t be one of those super fans that could dress like her because I am not Selena’s body type. Then, I remembered that Selena was a curvy woman. She would have wanted me and so many of her fans to live authentically and embrace the beauty that we are inside and out.

selena quote

And, what happened was magical! The Selena series resonated for many people who follow me on social media, in my opinion, because it felt like the most authentic in a way, a Tejana representing a Tejana. And, that’s powerful.

I thought I could never pull off that purple jumpsuit.  And, I was scared of that low-cut top that showed my bra. It reminded me of that unforgettable scene from Selena, the movie, where her dad, Mr. Quintanilla, played by Edward James Olmos, was like “busti-caca de la menta! Es un bra!” It’s like that in our culture. You get shamed for what you wear as a woman, a plus-size Latina at that because people tell you that you’re too gordita for that, and that’s just caca to be honest.

For a week, leading up to Selena’s birthday on April 16th, I dressed like Selena to challenge this ingrained belief that gorditas can’t wear certain things, but also to show myself that I look damn good doing it too! Sheer tops, bustiers, pleather, midriff showing, you don’t have to cover up because you are a woman or because you’re fat like me. I get to decide what I wear, when, and where.

I strutted my way to the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX for a special screening of the movie Selena on her birthday in my purple jumpsuit ready for my finale. We sang along, took pictures with Selena look-alikes, ate pepperoni pizza, shook our maracas, did the washing machine move, and sang happy birthday to Selena while the room was lit with candles in honor of La Reina.

A Little Black Dress For Any Season

The little black dress is a must have for any fashionistas wardrobe, a classic piece for any occasion or season. When you think of summer, black may not be the first color that pops out. But, it should. Black, like white, is a canvas to add color. And, that’s exactly what I did with my Tessa Ruched Dress from Kiyonna.

Kiyonna is a plus-size brand that has curvy women in mind when designing their dresses. This vintage-inspired dress has a romantic feel with ruched sleeves and handkerchief hem skirt that rests beautifully on a curvy body. The ruched waistband creates a beautiful silhouette by cinching at the waist. The ruched sleeves can also be worn off-the shoulder. And, the bonus? This little black dress has pockets!

For a summer night out,  I wanted to keep my look elegant and a little playful with a pop of color. Red has always been my go-to color to add a little splash. I paired the little black dress with a red clutch with rose detail and red tassel earrings.

What’s great about a little black dress is the versatility. You can pair it with black pumps and diamond earrings for an elegant, classic look for a wedding or special event. Slip on some bright, colorful wedges and grab your favorite print clutch for brunch with friends for a chic summer look.

The Tessa Ruched Dress in black is perfect for any season, even summer! And, you can also get it in a gorgeous sangria color or two beautiful floral prints! And, they’re 100% American made. Check it out here.

Be sure to sign up at Kiyonna for exclusive offers and get your perfect little black dress designed with you in mind.

Sophisticated Curves Box Review

Waiting in anticipation for my subscription box from Sophisticated Curves, I searched the website to get an insight as to what I could potentially get in my box. And, it made me more excited! Brands like Kiyonna, Eloquii, IGIGI, Nordstrom, Lane Bryant, and so many more are available to select.

To get the full experience of the subscription service, I selected the Fashion and Style Box. The box includes: 2 Dresses/Outfits; 3 Fashion Accessories; and Pamper Me Items. Additionally, there are two other boxes available: Fashion Subscription Box and Fashion Accessories Subscription Box. Each respective box comes with options for subscription duration. Check out their amazing options here.

When my box arrived, I was elated. I quickly opened it and found everything perfectly packaged and wrapped in tissue paper. There was even a little “Thank You” note. I went straight to unwrapping the garments and found I’d received two beautiful Kiyonna dresses.

This mauve Whimsy Wrap Dress is perfect for a daytime spring/summer look to grab brunch or enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk. I paired the outfit with some gold hoop earrings included in the box as accessories, and my jeweled strap heels and new white clutch. You can never go wrong with a wrap dress!

The second was a “wow factor” Kiyonna dress. The Valentina Illusion Dress is a bodycon that hugged me perfectly. I was a little scared looking at the dress that I would not be able to fit it over my chest since I am pretty wide in the bust and hip area. However, the material stretches and hugs my curves beautifully. I slipped on some black pumps and paired it with some diamond stud earrings included as an accessory in the box. There was also a beautiful floral print clutch wallet included. This is definitely a classic look perfect for any night out.

What was a pleasant added item was the Cherry Blossom Lotion & Mist Spray from Bath & Body Works included. It’s one of my favorite scents from their signature collection. Who doesn’t love Bath & Body Works?!

With all that’s included in the subscription box, it’s really worth it. And, there is flexibility in duration and price range. I cannot wait for what’s in store in my next box! It’s sure to be a pleasant surprise!
